Gym Owners Guide to TOFU, MOFU, BOFU

Most gym owners dump all their energy into chasing new leads. They're stuck at the top of the funnel, wondering why their conversion rates are terrible and their cost per acquisition keeps climbing.
The problem? They're ignoring where the real money gets made—the middle and bottom of the funnel.
TOFU: Top of Funnel (Awareness)
This is where potential members first discover you exist. They're not ready to buy. They're barely aware they have a problem.
They will follow you on social media or opt-in but won’t reply to your messages. They are “saving you” for the future when they’re ready.
Your job at TOFU: Get seen and build trust.
MOFU: Middle of Funnel (Consideration)
Now they know who you are. They're comparing you to other gyms, considering whether they're ready to commit, and evaluating if you're worth the investment.
This is where you get them booked for an appointment by following the lead nurture best practices. Combining calls, texts and emails to get a hold of them and book them in. This is also where appointment no-shows and reschedules exist.
Your job at MOFU: Prove you're the right choice.
BOFU: Bottom of Funnel (Decision)
They're ready. They just need the final push to say yes.
These are your appointments who said “I want to think about it” or need to look at their budget or talk to their spouse. They’ve met with you and need follow up on the decision. Sometimes a flash sale or special incentive pushes them over the edge to get started.
Your job at BOFU: Make it easy to commit and remove obstacles.
The Real Strategy
You need all three working together.
TOFU fills the pipeline. MOFU builds relationships and trust. BOFU converts to revenue.
Measure what's working at each stage. Track how people move through your funnel, identify where they're getting stuck, and fix those leaks before throwing more money at advertising.
Your members are already in your funnel somewhere. The question is whether you're meeting them where they are or trying to force them to jump stages they're not ready for.
